Insulation Removal

Most of the time it is not necessary to remove the existing insulation prior to adding new insulation. The old insulation has R-value and does not prevent the attic from being properly air sealed and then a new blanket of cellulose insulation can be added to increase the total R-value and also improve the performance to the old insulation.

However, there are times when it is a good idea to remove a portion or all of the old existing insulation prior to installing new insulation. Water from a roof leak can greatly damage insulation.  Rodents, such as mice or bats, living in an attic can cause damage. Most attics are visited by mice at some point. Mice like making a home and nesting in fiberglass. Having a few mice does not warrant removing all of the insulation, however, an infestation of mice or bats can greatly soil and compromise insulation as well as the decomposition of their feces can be a health hazard and in such a situation the removal of the old insulation is recommended.

There are also situations that the existing insulation is many years old, only an inch or two thick and black from years of dust and air infiltration, and the client would like to have it removed and install new insulation into a clean attic flat. Having a clean, uninsulated attic flat does allow for increased visibility of all air leakage points and overall improved thermal boundary performance.

Cozy Home Performance can inspect your attic and determine if it is necessary to remove some or all of the existing insulation prior to adding new insulation.

Batt insulation would be bagged and removed, loose insulation can be vacuumed out with an industrial vacuum.

I’m happy that the incentive was more than anticipated (As a Home Performance Contractor with Mass Save Cozy Home secured $2,760 in project incentive funds.). I enjoyed working with you and your crew. Everyone was pleasant to deal with. They were professional and courteous and when I had questions, the answers were in a non-technical response so I could understand. Each day they left the area clean.

Someone from the utility company was here today to inspect the work resulting from their incentive. They were very positive both about the quality of the recommendation, and the quality of the work. I am pleased too. I’m almost looking forward to next winter to see the difference.

The house definitely feels different – hard to explain the feeling, maybe more solid? Anyway, we have checked out all the work areas that we could and are really impressed. We can already feel the difference in some rooms – even with the warmer weather! Thanks to all the guys who were at the house. They were all very polite and pleasant and seem to have done an awesome job!
