In a historic neighborhood in Northampton, MA, this 19th century home underwent a custom attic retrofit. The expansive attic was decked with an outdated particle board with poor cellulose underneath.
A challenge of the project was to achieve the goals of the homeowner by maintaining significant storage space and access to the framed closets.

The custom decking detail increased the cost of the project-  diminished the “ROI” of the project-  yet increased the functionality of the home for a busy family and growing at-home business.

Before

Before-  decking covering poor insulation boundary and failed air barrier.         Notice the outside visible through eave.

After- Sealed perimeter, complete air barrier, a cozy hat on the house.

The newly improved plywood deck covers 8″ of dense packed cellulose and 4″ of polyiso rigid insulation.
